"The Sound of Scissors" is an art installation featuring paper cut characters by Torben Jalrstrøm Clausen of Odense, Denmark. Framed characters on the gallery walls have been freed by the artists' scissors to take their true forms - natural, whimsical, and happy. In addition, a slideshow of photos of the artist's process will be on view accompanied by the sound of the actual scissors working with the paper; photos by Danish photographer Karen Relster, and soundart by Danish composer Robert Cole Rizzi.
Denmark has a long tradition of paper cutting art, called "papirklip" in Danish. Hans Christian Andersen, the author of beloved children's stories, was also known as a skilled paper cut artist. Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen is a contemporary artist working within that tradition and has shared his art with audiences around the world.
Torben will be at the Museum of Danish America during Julefest, November 23 and 24, 2018. He will be demonstrating his papercutting, leading hands-on activities, and discussing his work in the gallery. His travel to Elk Horn is made possible by generous gifts from two Danish foundations: Aslaug og Carl Friis’s Legat; and Grosserer L. F. Foghts Fond.
"The Sound of Scissors: Paper Characters by Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen" is on view in the museum's Multimedia Room from July through December 2018.
This exhibition is sponsored in part by the Danish Sisterhood of America, Dronning Margrethe Lodge #15 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
