There's No Place Like Home

The upper aerial photograph shows the farm on the island of Ærø where Anna Katrina Hansen was born and grew up. The residence building has been remodeled since her day, but the outbuildings remain close to their original design. A central courtyard surrounded by two, three and four wings housing residences, stables, barns and other outbuildings is one of the most characteristic features of the traditional Danish farm.

After Anna Katrina grew up and came to Iowa she married Hans Steen and lived on the farm seen in the lower aerial photograph, taken in 1942. The farm is located in Melville Township in Audubon County.
