There's No Place Like Home

Karen Marie Rasmussen was born on the island of Zealand (Sjælland)in 1863 and immigrated in 1884. Before she left, this family portrait was taken in front of her home.

Later that same year Karen married Niels Christensen, who had immigrated two years earlier, in Harlan. They farmed in Hamlin Township, in Audubon County, where another family portrait was taken around 1909. Karen and Niels are seated in the front row.
