Peter Christian was born in 1867 in Albæk parish in Hjørring County, northern Jutland to Søren Kristensen and Mariane Hansdatter. The story handed down in the family was that his parents died when he was very young and he was raised by a German family, although, according to Peter’s confirmation record, his parents were still living when he was 14. Peter worked as a farm hand in Denmark until immigrating to Atlantic, Iowa in 1890 at the age of 23. It is thought that he worked for the railroad around the area until his marriage. ~~Mette was born in Kloster in Ringkøbing County in west Jutland in 1866. She left Denmark for Audubon in 1891, where she worked for awhile before moving to Atlantic. It was here she met Peter Christian. Per Oak Hill Church records and Cass County civil records the couple was married in Atlantic on April 9, 1895. They started farming in Oakfield Township in Audubon County and later purchased the farm in Hamlin Township where they lived until moving to Kimballton in 1935. Six children were born to their marriage: Mary, Elva, Herman Peter (who died at the age of 1), Hans Herman, Agnes, and Erhard F. Mette passed away just two weeks after the couple celebrated their golden anniversary; Peter C died in 1947. The poem shown here, written for their 50th anniversary by “brother Christian,” reflects the Danish tradition of festive songs and poems for such events.
