Long-term LoversNels Peter was born on a farm in Audubon County, Iowa, in 1888, the son of Danish immigrants Peder and Birgitte Kirstine (Nielsen) Jorgensen from Funen. Sinawas born in Elk Horn in 1893, one of 11 children of another Danish immigrant couple, Niels and Elsa (Hansen) Nielsen. The young couple was married in Audubon on February 15, 1911. They didn’t have a formal wedding picture taken, so the earliest image of them as a married couple was taken on their honeymoon trip to visit friends, Pete and Tillie Pedersen, in Enid, Oklahoma. Nels stands to the left in the back row; Sina is in her wedding dress, holding hands with Tillie and another friend. ~~ After returning to Iowa Nels and Sina lived in the Kimballton and Elk Horn area and at one time rented Bedstemor’s House. Nels played baseball locally and worked putting up windmills and pumps. Later he became a tractor mechanic and moved the family to Audubon. They were a happy couple and raised 3 daughters. During the gasoline shortage of 1976, Sina commented, “I don’t know what all the fuss is about. We did perfectly well without automobiles.”
