“I was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, in 1965, where my father was pastor. Before Confirmation Sunday I fell down at a track meet and had stitches in my knee, which kept me from bending my leg. In front of the entire congregation when everyone in the class knelt, I had to remain standing. Since the last thing anyone in junior high wants to do is stand out, I just scrunched my shoulders and tried to be as small as I could. My lasting memory will be of the girls processing and recessing, trying to walk in heels for the first time.” (David Johnson, email communication, April 16, 2013).
