Confirmation: Coming of Age in Denmark and the USNina was the daughter of immigrants Carl and Anna Carlsen, who homesteaded in Washington County. She was confirmed by Rev. Joseph Rasmussen, also a first-generation Danish American born in Chicago. Four years later, at the age of 19, Nina was married to her former pastor. They raised seven children and later farmed in Scranton, Greene County, Iowa.
