Andreas Karstensen was born in 1868 in Ødis, near Kolding, in Vejle County. This photograph was taken in Odense, on the nearby island of Funen, where Andreas apparently was stationed during his military service in what descendants recall as the “Viking Army.” Andreas came to the U.S. in 1892, settling in Shelby, Audubon and Cass counties. He died in 1939.
